There's an air of authenticity about holidays in Oliena. This charming hilltop town is the essence of the real rural Sardinia, famous in the past as a haunt of bandits, but today as a centre of wine production. Many people travel to Oliena for the feast days, when the town comes alive with colourful processions and exuberant celebrations. But even if you can't tie in with an event, it's a great place for summer holidays in very pleasant surroundings.
Unlike some of the bigger beach resorts, Oliena isn't really the sort of place for last minute holidays or late deals. But if you stay at the Su Gologone you'll no doubt be pleased you didn't hold out for a bargain holiday. Set amongst olive groves with eye-popping views over olive groves and vineyards, it's a magical place with a generous helping of 'wow factor'. Originally just a restaurant, it's famous for its food, including stomach bulging specialities like suckling pig and sweet temptations such as ricotta and honey ice cream.
It almost goes without saying that one of Oliena's main attractions is communing with the countryside. There are acres of glorious landscapes to explore, scattered with dense forests, babbling brooks and mountain grottoes. Or how about picking up some local cheese and wine and heading off for a picnic under a shady eucalyptus tree? It's a lovely way to pass a couple of hours without a care in the world.
