'Overlooked by soaring mountains, charming Oliena's a joy for food, wine and nature lovers.'
Want the real Sardinia? Welcome to Oliena. Spread beneath the towering Supramonte Mountains in vineyard country, this charming town presents a range of delights for food- and nature-lovers as well as anyone keen to get to the heart of this enigmatic island.
In the old parts of the town, you'll find narrow streets, simple churches and cobbled courtyards. Testifying to its past as an artisan town, the streets are dotted with little craft and goldsmiths workshops, all making for some excellent browsing. Wander in and pick up some thoughtful souvenirs of the local jewellery and gold laced embroidery – you'll be delighted when you see Oliena's womenfolk wearing the traditional silver, pearl and gold-threaded costume your purchases are inspired by.
When you're ready to eat, be prepared for a feast. Renowned for its foodie heritage, Oliena's awash with fine restaurants and tempting eateries serving local delicacies like roasted mountain pig. Don't miss the local cheese – almost every dish here uses Oliena's pecorino or sheep's cheese – and Cannonau, the strong, rustic wine made in local wineries.
No trip here would be complete without savouring the local scenery. All around you'll find dense forests, natural springs and mountain grottoes hiding strange rock formations and remains of age-old settlements. Hire a guide or, if you're an experienced walker, strike out by yourself and commune with the untouched nature of the place.
Alternatively, if you fancy time on the beach, head for nearby Cala Gonone. Here boats will whisk you to the spectacular white sands of Cala Luna for a day to remember.
