If you're harbouring romantic notions of a quaint little fishing port, modern, purpose-built Baia Sardinia won't be your cup of cappuccino. But what it lacks in traditional character, this lively little resort certainly makes up for in where it's at. Set on a sweeping bay with glorious sandy beaches, the resort is surrounded by acres of beautiful scenery, with sparkling creeks and soaring granite rock faces. There's also plenty going on. Almost any day of the week you'll find dancing, singing or street theatre in the town centre. There are watersports on tap, and with crystal clear waters, it's also a great place for scuba diving. If you don't fancy kitting up with all the gear, just stick on a mask and snorkel. You'll still be able to see plenty of fascinating marine life. As for night time entertainment, there's everything from discos to evening markets selling traditional Sardinian arts and crafts. If you fancy an excursion, the peninsula of Capo Ferro is a good choice. It's got an historic 19th century lighthouse, and close by is Bisce Island, which is part of the National Reserve of the Archipelago of the Maddalena. It was just off this island in 1993 that the USS Hartford, a US navy nuclear submarine, ran aground, causing around 9 million dollars worth of damage! (Imagine filling in that insurance claim form!) Alternatively, head for the hills, where you'll find some good examples of Sardinia's famous ancient stone structures, 'nuraghi' and 'giant's tombs'.
