Hotel La Vue D'or

in Sorrento , Neapolitan Riviera T rating: 3

  • Peaceful location
  • Recently renovated
  • Attractive pool area
Protected by mountains, cocooned by lemon orchards, and looking out towards Vesuvius, this hotel offers exquisite views.
La Vue d’Or means ‘golden views’, and it’s an apt name for this hotel. It finds a home in the hills just outside Sorrento, and views reach out across the Sorrentine peninsula to Mount Vesuvius. The rooftop sun terrace, which is furnished with loungers and edged by terracotta pots, is a good place to enjoy the vistas. And just down some stone steps from the terrace is an oval pool, with a backdrop of mountains carpeted in pine and chestnut trees.

Inside, bedrooms are painted a rich, buttery yellow, and come with brightly-coloured soft-furnishings and a balcony. The buffet restaurant has a grand feel to it, thanks to its ornately patterned chairs and lace drapes. Dishes here involve fresh seafood and local cheeses like stringy fiordilatte.

One of the pleasures of staying here is it gives you a chance to really experience local life. The huddle of lemon orchards and olive groves near the hotel are criss-crossed with ancient walking trails leading to tiny villages and age-old hamlets. Schiazzano, for example, dates back to the 15th century. You’ll drive past the orchards on the hotel’s courtesy bus into Sorrento. It runs from early morning until late at night and the journey takes 15 minutes. There’s also a bus stop across the road that will take you to Amalfi and beyond.

Your guide to Sorrento, Neapolitan Riviera

“With buzzing Vespas winding through narrow backstreets and red chillies hanging from shop doorways, Sorrento offers up an authentic slice of Italy.”

One of the first things you’ll notice about Sorrento is its location. Sitting on a cliff that drops sheer into the sea, the town overlooks the Bay of Naples and has a view of Mount Vesuvius to boot. The dramatic coastline gives way to sunbathing platforms and the occasional small pebbly beach where you can soak up the sun. Sorrento life revolves around Piazza Tasso, where tables and chairs spill out of coffee shops onto the cobbles. Here, take your seat to watch the street theatre that is Neapolitan life unfold. By day, nonnas sit crocheting while old men put the world to rights in a flurry of animated hand gestures. By night, the square comes to life with trendy twenty-somethings en route to the late night bars. Away from this lively meeting place, hop on a tour bus to nearby Pompeii or take a stroll down to Marina Piccola and set sail for chic Capri. Closer to home, saunter along the exclusive Corso Italia in search for that all-important pair of designer shoes. And don’t miss the old town where you’ll find a rabbit’s warren of alleyways laced with old-world antique shops and trattorias serving regional specialities. Talking of food, eating out in Sorrento is a delight. From pizzas cooked in wood-fire ovens to heaped platters of seafood linguine along the harbourfront, there’s plenty to tempt you out for an al fresco meal under the stars.
