Grand Hotel Vesuvio

in Sorrento , Neapolitan Riviera T rating: 5

  • Spectacular views
  • Spacious pool area
  • Quiet hillside location
Nestled high up on a hillside among lemon and olive groves, this hotel has breathtaking views in every direction. From its lofty position it looks out across the Bay of Naples, with Vesuvius plum in the centre. And, as it’s set back from the road, there’s peace and quiet all round.

Design-wise, it’s a mix of rustic Italian style and the kind of grandeur its name suggests. The spacious lobby is all shiny marble floors and spotlighting, while the bedrooms are more classic affairs. Bright and roomy, they’re decorated in a palette of blue and white, with splashes of yellow. Elsewhere, large picture windows frame the views.

Outside, the main attraction is the large pool. There’s room on the surrounding terrace for sunbathing, or you can head to the dinky pebble beach of Tonarella – it’s just a ten-minute walk away.

Food-wise, the Continental breakfast is a help-yourself affair, while in the evening there’s an a la carte menu to choose from. The hotel puts on speciality dinners every week, and as the restaurant leads straight on to the bar, you won’t need to venture far for a nightcap.

To top it all off, the hotel’s just a short drive from the centre of Sorrento. The route there is down a winding hill, so there’s a free shuttle laid on.

Your guide to Sorrento, Neapolitan Riviera

“With buzzing Vespas winding through narrow backstreets and red chillies hanging from shop doorways, Sorrento offers up an authentic slice of Italy.”

One of the first things you’ll notice about Sorrento is its location. Sitting on a cliff that drops sheer into the sea, the town overlooks the Bay of Naples and has a view of Mount Vesuvius to boot. The dramatic coastline gives way to sunbathing platforms and the occasional small pebbly beach where you can soak up the sun. Sorrento life revolves around Piazza Tasso, where tables and chairs spill out of coffee shops onto the cobbles. Here, take your seat to watch the street theatre that is Neapolitan life unfold. By day, nonnas sit crocheting while old men put the world to rights in a flurry of animated hand gestures. By night, the square comes to life with trendy twenty-somethings en route to the late night bars. Away from this lively meeting place, hop on a tour bus to nearby Pompeii or take a stroll down to Marina Piccola and set sail for chic Capri. Closer to home, saunter along the exclusive Corso Italia in search for that all-important pair of designer shoes. And don’t miss the old town where you’ll find a rabbit’s warren of alleyways laced with old-world antique shops and trattorias serving regional specialities. Talking of food, eating out in Sorrento is a delight. From pizzas cooked in wood-fire ovens to heaped platters of seafood linguine along the harbourfront, there’s plenty to tempt you out for an al fresco meal under the stars.

My husband and I have just returned from yet another wonderful holiday at this hotel. We first visited here in 2002 and have been coming back every year since. In fact, we visit 3 times a year now! We have always found the staff to be very welcoming... more on this review
