Holidays to Sant'Agnello take you to quiet piazzas and rustic restaurants, and leave you in just the right place to make stop-offs at Sorrento and Herculaneum.
A town with clifftop views
Sant'Agnello is a clifftop town about 25 kilometres from Naples, on the Sorrentine Peninsula. It’s easy to fill your days here, lingering over a plate of pasta, sipping espresso in one of the trendy cafés or maybe hiking out into the hills that spread for miles around. And away from the peaceful piazzas, you’ve got lively Sorrento just minutes away.
A lift takes you down to Marinella Beach, a popular patch of volcanic sand at the foot of Sant'Agnello’s cliff. It comes with a large pier with sunloungers, umbrellas and easy access to the water. There’s a host of watersports, such as canoeing and pedal boats, and children will love the waterslides right on the seashore.
Daytrips by train
The fast Napoli-Sorrento train that passes through Sant'Agnello station gets you to Herculaneum in 45 minutes. The town was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in 79AD, and tours through the ruins take you past the mosaics and houses paused in time. Southbound, the train zips you to Sorrento in just 2 minutes, where must-sees include the Roman ruins at Villa Pollio and the grand 11th-century Basilica di Sant’Antonino. You’ll probably wind up among the elegant bars and restaurants of Piazza Tasso.
