Guide to Maiori

'A bustling seaside resort with whitewashed back streets, Maiori is a great combo for bagging both the beach life and the Neapolitan sights.'

If you're seeking oodles of beach life but with plenty of sightseeing on the side, Maiori is right up your holiday street. Fronted by one of the finest beaches on the Amalfi Coast, it's just the ticket for kicking off your shoes as well as setting off on your own sightseeing adventures. As well as a delightful carefree air – the scent from the surrounding lemon groves makes this seaside town even more enchanting. And its dark sandy beach is perfect for enjoying the Neapolitan sunshine and bright-blue Mediterranean. Take a stroll away from the sands and you'll first come across the classically Italian seafront, crammed full of ice cream bars, pizzerias and bars. Carry on and you'll arrive in the charming, authentic Maiori - a welcoming maze of narrow streets, whitewashed houses and weekly markets that beckon you in for longer-than-planned sessions of pottering. Wander further again, and you'll even find the remains of the ancient walls that once guarded the town in Roman times. Talking of history, amble around Maiori's beautiful Santa Maria domed church and you can view its world-famous carving of the Madonna and Child. Visit the romantic 10th century monastery perched above the town and admire its age-old frescoes and chapel. And for some really serious sightseeing, take a trip to Paestum and marvel at its superbly-preserved 6th century Greek temples. Or if it's some retail therapy that's calling, how about strolling the steep, shop-lined streets of candy-coloured Positano or taking a boat excursion to the oh-so glamorous Capri? When evening falls and the day-trippers leave, pick one of Maiori's waterfront restaurants and dine on succulent seafood beside the dusk-tinged Mediterranean. However you spend your time here, just don't be surprised if you decide never to come home.

South of Maiori is the archaeological site of Paestum which is well worth a visit. Founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC it was once a great city but fell into decline and was gradually overtaken by forests. Forgotten for over 16 centuries, Paestum was rediscovered and you can now explore the ruins which feature the remains of 3 Doric temples, all wonderfully preserved, for a real insight into life during ancient times.

Beaches

Maiori has one of the best beaches on the Amalfi Coast made up of dark, pebbly, volcanic sand. It's at it most popular in July and August - the local coastal road which runs parallel to the beach can be busy and slow-moving at this time.

Eating out

A long line of restaurants, pizzerias, cafes and bars stretch alongside Maiori's beach promenade for about 1km - so there's no shortage of places to eat! Being on the coast, fish and seafood dishes feature heavily on many menus so why not try some of the local Neapolitan cuisine?

Nightlife

Maori is the 'loudest' of the resorts along the Amalfi coast, although the pace quietens when the sun goes down. Most evenings are spent savouring meals in the range of cafes and restaurants that flank the beach. Why not join the Italian families for their evening 'passeggiata', a leisurely stroll along the waterfront?

Shopping

A good selection of shops are located in the resort centre of Maiori. The town also plays host to a weekly market which sells everything from regional cheeses and salami to clothes and shoes . For a wider shopping experience, head to nearby Amalfi, only 5km away.

Local information

Further along the coastline from Maiori lies the fashionable and picture postcard-pretty town of Positano. It occupies a dramatic position on the Amalfi Coast and has been a source of inspiration to countless writers and artists. Second only to Capri in the celebrity stakes, Positano is home to a number of stars including the renowned film director, Franco Zefferelli. It's easy to see why Positano attracts the rich and famous - its cobbled, winding lanes are littered with chic boutiques and its colourful assortment of pastel-washed villas spill gracefully down the cliff-face to rippling waters of the sea below.

Location

Situated on southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula, 2km from Minori

Transfer time

1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes dependant on heavy traffic on the coastal roads in high season. Due to the nature of the resort some transfers are by bus and then minibus and may combine more than one flight, which may mean a short wait on the coach at the airport.
