'Captivating Capri will sweep you away with its spectacular, rugged scenery, aquamarine waters, smart resorts and chic way of life.'
An enchanting island in the sparkling Bay of Naples facing Sorrento, it's drawn the rich and famous for years, even back in Roman times when the Emperors Caesar Augustus and Tiberius made it their home. Today, the togas are replaced with designer outfits of the people who come here to experience its rugged scenery, handsome villas and sophisticated piazzas.
The main resort, Capri town, looks like a stage setting. Around its small squares, Moorish-style alleyways beg your attention, vying with the smart trattorias, galleries and boutiques of the side streets. After your daily bout of exploring, lunching and shopping, settle at the buzzing Piazza Umberto to sip on a cappuccino and watch the fashionable people shimmy by.
But there's a lot more to discover than just the beautiful life. Take a bus to Anacapri, a delightful, shady-streeted village and ride the nearby chairlift up the breathtaking Mount Solaro. If you're a history buff, view the remains of Tiberius' Villa Jovis, with its servants' quarters and cliff from which the Emperor's victims were thrown. Take a boat to the famous Blue Grotto, a stunning blue-watered cave. And for time out, retire to the lovely beaches and coves washed by bejewelled waters.
And make sure that after a starlit supper, you party too. Late nights rule the day here, especially in Capri town, where a host of discos and bars stay open till the small hours.
Enjoy a ride on the funicular from the pretty main harbour to the capital of the island, Capri Town, where you can explore the intricate network of quaint alleyways and small squares. To the west of Capri lies another popular attraction, the quiet town of Anacapri, where you can take a chair lift up to the top of Mount Solaro to enjoy panoramic views of the island.
