If hotels were film stars this would be Positano’s Sophia Loren. It exudes glamour. All stepped terraces cut into a promontory just outside town, its views are cinematic in scale. To your left, you’ve got Positano tumbling down the hillside. In front of you, the satin-blue Med stretches as far as the eye can see.

Step inside and you’re met with a foyer that’s all stately home elegance. Period furnishings, gilt-framed mirrors and blue salon chairs - all that’s missing are the velvet ropes cordoning them off. But the real feature here is the rooms. They’re arranged either in the main building or as outlying villas, and each has its own sea-view balcony. The standard rooms are more contemporary in style, with daubs of deep turquoise and yellow teamed with flatscreen satellite TVs, minibars and air-conditioning. The deluxe rooms, meanwhile, revert back to classic décor, and come with spacious terraces.

On a lower terrace, you’ll find the pool ringed by sunloungers and crowned with a jazzily tiled cupola that’s home to the pool bar. Take the funicular down further and you’ll reach the hotel’s other outdoor star - its beach. This crescent of sand and pebbles is lined with cream deckchairs and overlooked by further sunbathing decks.

It’s easy to get into Positano proper from here. The hotel’s courtesy bus runs every hour or so and takes around ten minutes. Otherwise, you can walk. It’s 45 minutes or so, but the views are stellar all the way.
