A great location and a laid-back vibe come together at the White House Studios, which are within walking distance of Alykanas’ beach.

The White House Studios give you the best of both worlds. For starters, they’re in a quiet spot, so they’ve got a really peaceful feel. That said, they’re only a ten-minute walk from the centre of Alykanas, and less than five minutes’ walk from the town’s beach.

Back at the complex, the studios are set in pretty sand-coloured blocks, complete with whitewashed window shutters, and separated by tree-dotted lawns that weave their way around the buildings. At the centre of the grounds you’ll find the pool, which is surrounded by loungers and parasols. There’s a bar here, too, serving up drinks and snacks throughout the day. Better still, the whole place is overlooked by pine-cloaked hills, so you get great views of the Zante countryside.

In the evenings, there’s a lively vibe – expect things like quiz nights. Plus, regular barbecue nights are put on.

If you’re looking for discos, fast food parlours and booze cruises… forget this place. Alykanas is several miles and a world away from all that. In this small, but growing, village is life has stayed firmly in the slow lane. Traditional tavernas serve typically Greek food and horse-drawn carriages take you at a trot to neighbouring Alikes – setting the pace for an unhurried, hassle-free holiday. There’s a choice of café bars and little local shops to browse in – that is if you can tear yourself away from the sea and sand. Nightlife is noted by its absence – unless you count taking all evening over a table groaning with stuffed tomatoes, swordfish steaks, honey-soaked baklava and light white wine. And the whole place is enveloped in a friendly informality, a sort of camaraderie of like-minded sunseekers. You could hire a car to explore the rural interior. Board a boat trip to swim at Smugglers Cove. Or you could just sip a sundowner as you look across the sea to Kefalonia… and plan another idyllically lazy day.
