Anthi

With its soft sandy beaches, gently rolling landscape, relaxed atmosphere and traditional tavernas, the Vassilikos area has already gained a faithful following. Situated down a small, unmade track, these three charming villas are set amidst delightfully mature gardens full of colourful flowers and shrubs. Purple bougainvillaea spills over the villas' verandas and patios and all around are the joyous reds and pinks of geraniums and roses. Pagoni is detached and has all the comfort of a real home, from personal touches - books and ornaments - to solid, polished wooden furniture, an open fireplace and a wonderfully large L-shaped veranda from which the sea can just be glimpsed over the tips of the olive trees. The twin and double bedrooms open on to a balcony which overlooks the palms, medlars, pines and cypresses of the back garden. Set in the same grounds, Villas Lula and Anthi are semi-detached but are staggered in layout so that their spacious, covered verandas do not overlook each other. Their decor is uncluttered, with marble floors, pine furniture and small touches such as framed maps on the walls adding a homely appeal.

Whilst the enticing pool will probably not deter you from visiting the fabulous sandy beaches that fringe the peninsula, it is certainly a welcome bonus to be able to enjoy a refreshing swim in the lovely gardens. With a car there is a plentiful supply of tavernas within easy reach and Zante Town is close enough to be able to spend an evening under its elegant arcades. For the really energetic there are further tracks to walk, mountain bikes to hire, horses to ride - and the rest of Zante to discover.
