Nestling on a hillside opposite the ruins of an old mansion, the well-furnished, small and cosy Sarakina Apartments have great views of the countryside. The away-from-it-all setting appeals to more independent holidaymakers, who also appreciate its easy access to the resort centre.
To feel like a local, head for the family-run Sarakina Taverna next door which serves superb food (mid-May to mid-October) with nightly Greek dancing or music. There may be some noise from the taverna, but you can always pull up a chair and join in.
