A modern town spreads out behind an old and pretty fishing port, filling the gap between the sea and the ancient acropolis. All eras of Thassos life are here. Classical relics include temples, shrines, an amphitheatre and part of the Roman road. A medieval fortress led the way in architectural reclaim – utilising stones from fallen ruins. Old-world atmosphere focuses on the fishing harbour, while contemporary town streets are home to up-tempo bars and clubs. And there are café bars – and superb ice-cream – around the church square. The golden sand beach, close to the harbour, is a lively and popular place, with pine trees for shade and tavernas for sustenance. And on the outskirts of town, Varthy is one of a sprinkling of quieter bays and coves. Known locally (and signposted) as Limin or Limenas, Thassos Town is also the island’s best place for shopping with plenty of places to purchase the local specialities... white marble, honey, repro icons and spoil-yourself jewellery.
