"A long and sumptuous line of sand dunes backs the bay of Skala Potamias, just 9 miles south of Thassos Town on the sheltered eastern shore. It's quiet. It's simple. And it's off the beaten track. So, depending on your perspective, it could be perfect…"
While the main coastal road takes a short detour to wind through the hills above it, an offshoot leads you down the valley to this sleepy village. Set at the southern end of a big horseshoe bay, Skala Potamias has a few tavernas, fewer shops, a couple of cafe bars and no nightlife. So what draws people to these shores? Well… the shore. It's a gorgeous sandy beach, so big that there's always bags of space for serious sun-worship. You could catch the breeze at the water's edge on a two-mile stroll to the northern end of the bay – where watersports add to a livelier scene at Golden Sands resort. Or work off the holiday calories by doing the distance through the dunes. Of course, you could just settle into a gentle holiday routine – full English breakfast at one of the cafes, a day devoted to sun and sea with a parasol on the sands, and evening table talk at one of the tavernas that line the little harbour. And Thassos Town is near enough for shopping forays – there's an hourly bus service from 7am to early evening. So, while you may feel well off the beaten track here, you're really not far at all.
