"The strict building regulations in Skopelos Town has ensured that it remains full of character - the houses are linked together by bridges in their unique type of architecture."
The captivating main town of Skopelos on the east coast of the island has been built on a hill giving a picturesque view of the mulberry trees below that line the bustling waterfront. The trees bring a welcome shade to the many cafes and tavernas, most of whom have their famous plum or prune-based recipes on the menu.Winding up from the waterfront the tiny cobbled streets and alleyways are covered with intricate designs made from seashells and pebbles that lead up to a ruined fortress. The interior of the town boasts a myriad of good quality shops selling local crafts and all types of delicacies, especially prunes for which they are well known.
For an insight into a traditional Skopelos house visit the Folklore Museum at the port where there is a three-story reconstruction showing furniture, tools, embroidery and other household items, including a Skopelean wedding room with traditional costumes.
Over a hundred tiny white chapels are dotted throughout the town, but the landmark church of Panagia tou Pyrgou overlooking the harbour and reached by slate steps, is especially beautiful with its shining fish-scale roof.
