Guide to Troulos

'A dream spot for sun and sand devotees, Troulos Bay combines balmy days with a truly rural setting.'

Lying on the south coast in a flurry of picturesque olive groves and rolling farmland, Troulos Bay is a perfect haven for sun and sand devotees of all ages. The beach is utter bliss - an arch of sumptuous yellow sand gradually sweeping into warm waters so transparent you can see the seabed shining through them. Plunge and paddle in the bay and then hit your sunlounger for dreamy days coddled by the warmth of the sun. If all this sounds too easy, swap the beach for a bus or boat into Skiathos Town for a fix of retail therapy or lively nightlife. Or commune with nature by exploring the magical countryside around Troulos, perhaps by visiting pretty Kounistra monastery or one of the smaller coves indented in the headland. When your appetite's up, retire to one of Troulos' excellent tavernas – either by the beach or inland in the village centre. Take a seat and dine on fresh fish like seabass or red mullet, plucked from the Aegean the very same day. Wash it down with some of Skiathos' beloved Boutari wine and another island delicacy – sweet walnut pie smothered in vanilla ice cream. Later on, round off the day by joining a sunset cruise around the nearby coastline, taking in views of the tiny islet of Troulonissa, which lends Troulos its name. Relax on deck, ouzo in hand, and let those last remaining cares drift out to sea as the dimming rays cast the cliffs and coves in a dusky glow.

For a daytime snack, head for a 'kafenio' - a traditional Greek cafe, where you can enjoy all sorts of liquid treats, from tea to beer, from soft drinks to ouzo.

Nightlife

When the sun goes down, there are a few bars in which to have a drink and also a music bar above the supermarket to dance the night away in.
