Guide to Megaliamos

"Megali Aamos is more of a beach area than a regular holiday resort, however it is one of the most beautiful of the sixty-two beaches on the lush, green island of Skiathos, stretching for almost two kilometres along the coast and ending at the town of Vassilia."

Megali Amos is named after the long shingle beach which runs along the resort. You'll find a small selection of tavernas and souvenir shops here, although Skiathos Town, approximately one kilometre away is where you'll need to go for a more cosmopolitan ambiance.
For those wanting to top up their tan, for the young at heart, and those with young families will know that they are on to a sure winner with the beautiful beach at Megali Amos. The steep hills of Skiathos rise behind the town providing a shelter from the strong north wind and only a gentle northeasterly breeze manages to escape across the sands, bringing a welcome respite to the hot sun.
Spend the morning on the beach where the sand stretches as far as the eye can see to the town of Vassilia, have lunch in one of the nearby tavernas and then spend the afternoon more energetically with the many watersports on offer. If you wish to take your lunch on to the beach you'll find an excellent mini-market at Megali Amos, so you need never move from your chosen spot.
The island's main road passes through the town and leads to Skiathos Town, the island's cosmopolitan capital. Here you will find all the bustle of a busy town, filled with numerous souvenir shops, a host of lively bars and restaurants, discos, and an exciting nightlife. Investigate the tiny winding lanes off the main shopping street where you will find shops selling more traditional items such as pottery and good quality linen. Skiathos Town also boasts an open-air theatre where you can enjoy concerts, exhibitions and puppet shows.
The traditional whitewashed houses covered in bright magenta bougainvillaea is a contrast to the heady atmosphere of the town, and for a taste of real Skiathos life, explore the stunningly beautiful inland areas where the pathways lead to breathtaking uninhabited scenery. A visit to the peaceful Evangelistria Monastery, a half hour's drive to the north, with its triple-domed church, museum, and garden courtyard is a haven of tranquillity, where you can buy wine made by the monks and gather your resources in preparation for another night on the town.
