An introduction to Kanapitsa

Set on the Kanapitsa peninsula to the south of Skiathos, this area won’t be your thing if you fancy a wild, fun-loving holiday. Instead, expect beaches and lots of them, and a slightly more upmarket air than in many other Skiathos resorts. Apart from a few tavernas scattered around the pine-forested hills, there’s little else here to keep you from that longed-for stretch of sands. And boy, the beaches here will please purists no end. First, Kanapitsa boasts two sweeps of gorgeous sand blessed with Skiathos’ trademark pine backdrop and blue-green waters. Better still, they both possess a Blue Flag, proving their cleanliness, and a healthy quota of sunbeds, watersports and tavernas, so you can while away the whole day here without interruption. As if all this wasn’t enough, you’ll find even more great sun-worshipping spots nearby. Take one of the steep footpaths crossing the peninsula to discover quieter sandy coves like Koutsouri and Delfiniki – the latter reached over rocks from Koutsouri. Plus there’s the lure of Tzaneria beach further up the coast. Enclosed in a pretty bay, the soft sands and beach tavernas here offer an appealing change of backdrop from Kanapitsa. At night, this sleepy spot keeps the emphasis fixed on the sands. At dusk, return to a beachside taverna for a meal of fresh, grilled fish whilst watching the sky turn mauve over the glittering bay. Or hop on a water taxi into Skiathos Town to enjoy the bustling tavernas, ouzeris and multi-ethnic restaurants packing the streets. And perhaps stay on late to make a night of it as the capital’s vibrant discos and bars come alive.
