Perched in verdant hills five kilometres from Skiathos Town, it's perfect for those wanting to secrete themselves in unspoilt Greece. Evangelistria isn't really a town at all – more a peaceful oasis surrounded by lush countryside and mule tracks that will delight ramblers and nature-lovers. But what makes this place famous is its monastery – a delightful, red-and-slate-tiled gem poised high above a gorge. Complete with a picturesque, flower-filled inner courtyard, this 18th century monastery is the only one still working in Skiathos. It's also the spot where the country's revolutionary fighters first raised the Greek flag in defiance of the Turks in 1807. It's a truly charming place to stroll around. Wander silently through its chapels to see the colourful frescoes, delicate goldware and magnificent wood-carved icon. Then browse for mementoes in its shop, where you can buy the red wine, olive oil and sticky honey produced by the monks who live here. Away from this historical spot, there's a dusting of rural tavernas in the area that demand your time. Sit down here for a delicious meal of fresh fish and crisp, local Boutari wine and you'll think you're in heaven. When you yearn for the beach, jump on a boat from Skiathos Town to breathtaking Lalaria. A crescent of white 'lalaria' pebbles framed by dramatic rock arches and cliffs, it's one of Greece's most stunning spots. Alternatively, go independent and follow a woodland track to one of the secluded coves folded into the north coast – you might get lucky and have it all to yourself.
