Guide to Oia

'Wealthy sea captains once made Oia their home, and with its white houses and blue domed churches looking out over a spectacular sea view, it's easy to see why they liked it so much.'

A favourite haunt for artists Ois is built into the steep slope of a volcano rim. It was badly damaged by the 1956 earthquake, it's been lovingly restored to its former glory and is now as appealing as ever - though it remains much quieter than its big sister Thira along the coast. Oia's narrow passageways become crowded in the evening as holidaymakers gather here to witness the unbelievable sunsets. Not to mention the restaurants. Tuck into everything from local Greek specialties to Mediterranean favourites. One thing's for sure, you won't go hungry here. But what this place is really renowned for is its jewellery shops. Pick up some unique – but expensive - mementos made from local volcanic stone. And then there are plenty of fashionable boutiques selling chic clothing to complement your jewellery, too. If you'd rather not be tempted, follow the 200 steps down to the port, where a couple of fish tavernas overlook two little beaches. It's a serene spot to while away the afternoon in. It's also the place to catch a day trip to the peaceful island of Thirassia, just across the water. Back in the village, the Maritime Museum is well worth a visit. Its figureheads, seamen's chests, models of ships and old photos are relics from the old sea captains who loved this place so much.
