  • Small and intimate
  • 5 minutes from the beach
  • Charming, stylish ambience
Every so often, you strike gold. You stumble across a holiday hideaway that sparkles like a perfectly polished diamond. A place that splits you right down the middle – part of you wants to dash home and tell all your friends about it, the other part wants to keep your discovery all to yourself. And that’s exactly how you’ll feel about this hotel. They say the best things come in small packages and that’s certainly true of this place. It’s a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, which basically means it’s an intimate little retreat with oodles of style. Outside, bright pink blooms splash the pristine whitewashed walls, their gorgeous fragrance mingling with the sweet scent of suntan lotion. Around the pool, bronzed people are stretched out on elegant striped sunloungers, snoozing or sipping fresh fruit thirst-quenchers. Inside, too, is real eye candy. Splashes of modern art seem to make getting anywhere take twice as long, while the trendy-looking spa sees to it any carefully-laid sightseeing plans are ditched in favour of a delicious shiatsu massage. Come nightfall, inviting clusters of sofas are bathed in soft, shimmering candlelight and the mouthwatering aroma of the buffet lures you siren-like to the contemporary dining room. If you don’t fancy a buffet every night, then you could always book yourself in for a meal at the gourmet restaurant. It costs extra but it’s well worth it. Your room’s a chic cocoon of comfort that’s been lovingly pieced together by designers whose fingers are very much on the pulse. Rounding off this little treasure is its setting. You’ll find it 10km from the island’s romantic capital Thira, and an easy walk from the glittering black sands of Kamari beach. Sit back and breathe easy – you’ve found the perfect spot from which to conduct your love affair with sun-blushed Santorini.

Your guide to Kamari, Santorini

“A beautiful black sand beach make Kamari a favourite place to hang loose, lie back and chill under the hot, hot sun.”

Ten kilometres away from Thira, Kamari stretches languidly along the coast. The whole town was rebuilt after the 1956 earthquake. And nowadays the road along the back of the beach is pedestrianised for easy strolling between the many restaurants and eateries here. You’ll find some great, traditional tavernas both on the main drag and on streets running inland. Tuck into platefuls of moussaka, kebabs cooked over wood-burning stoves and chargrilled fish. After you’ve eaten, the open-air cinema shows recent release films every night, and there’s an annual jazz festival here too, frequented by Greek and foreign artists. In August and September, you can even catch one of the local church festivals which are gaily celebrated in style by locals. If you’ve got serious sightseeing in mind, take the switchback road up the headland of Mesa Vouno to visit the ruins of Ancient Thira, where the remains of temples, houses, an agora and a theatre are spread across a site which must have been chosen for its fabulous sea views. The walk takes about an hour, and it’s best to set off early before it gets too hot. But the reward is well worth the effort. Just outside Kamari, Art Space is a wonderfully unusual art gallery, with paintings and sculptures hung in old wine cellars. The owner may well offer you a glass of his local vinsanto wine, which can only add to your appreciation of the art.

The outdoor space and beautifully manicured grounds really make this hotel special. It has a lovely large main pool but the real attraction is the smaller jacuzzi pools. There are two for all guests plus four private pools for the executive rooms giving... more on this review
