Just a kilometre or so away from the lively streets of Thira, Firostefani has a calmer feel with a more traditional ambiance. It’s set a little higher, too – so the view of the caldera is spectacular. If you’re lucky enough to have a terrace with sea views, you’ll probably spend every evening watching the sun go down. Food-wise, you’ve got a handful of restaurants and hotels in the picturesque main square And cluster along the edge of the caldera spilling over down the steep slopes. Traditional tavernas are the order of the day and they’re tempting to say the least. Mealtimes aside, there’s plenty to see in and around the village. The beautiful church is surrounded by shady cypress trees, and nearby you can visit the Agios Nikolas Monastery to admire it’s typically Cycladic architecture. It’s less than 10 kilometres to stunnig Oia, where art galleries and jewellery shops are waiting to tempt you - and you can catch a day trip to the island of Thirassia. The real beauty of Firostefani though, is enjoying good food and local wine, with that amazing view of the Aegean and the ancient volcanic crater as a backdrop.
