'Picturebook Pythagorion struts its stuff on a pretty waterfront.'
Greek resorts don't come much better than Pythagorion. Set on Samos' south east coast, it's choc full of tavernas, fish restaurants, bars and shops, all of which make it extremely popular come July and August. But whatever the time of year, it's still worth coming here to savour its many charms. Its pretty waterfront and maze of cobbled lanes hum with activity from morn 'til night. Get up early, settle at a taverna and watch as the fishing caiques unload their catches. Then wander along the water's edge to ponder the statue of the great mathematician, Pythagoras, from whom the town takes it name – he was born on Samos in the 6th century BC. Talking about long ago, Pythagorion is steeped in history. In the hills overlooking the resort, you'll find the remnants of the ancient city of Samos. There's also the extraordinary Efpalinon aqueduct, which once transported water to the city. And within Pythagorion, a romantic 19th century castle is a further reminder of its colourful past. Once acquainted with the town's roots, it's time to hit the beaches puncturing the surrounding coastline. On either side of the tree-shaded harbour, you'll find a couple of pleasant beaches, whilst further out, pebble and sandy bays make perfect spots for snoozing and swimming. Or why not hop on a ferry to marvel at the ruins of Ephesus on the Turkish mainland? Come sunset, don't expect Pythagorion to turn into sleepsville. The twinkling harbourfront tavernas and bars clink with glasses well into the wee small hours. And if you fancy seeing the night out, a few dancespots let you strut your stuff till even later.
