The Samos Sun is one of those hotels that get everything right. With just 68 rooms, it's a fairly dinky complex. But as the saying goes, the best things come in small packages. And that's certainly true here. Take the freeform swimming pool, for example. Not only is it sunk into a smart terrace with sun beds, parasols, palms and bougainvillea – it's the biggest pool on the island. Plus there's a large, pagoda-style bar on the side which stays open late into the night. The views over the countryside and distant sea and mountains are pretty impressive, too. Built in an attractive neoclassic style, the hotel has got all the classic Greek good looks. Think whitewashed walls, terracotta tiled roof and arched doorways. Inside is just as eye catching. There's a light and airy lounge with chequered floors and comfy sofas. A stylish bar with a retro edge. And the elegant restaurant serves Greek and International cuisine. Also housed inside is a games room and a gym with a sauna and an open-air whirlpool bath. The restful bedrooms are inviting, too. Following the rest of the Samos Sun's design, the decor is fuss free with pale-washed walls, crisp white bedding and light wood furniture. They're fairly compact but have everything you could need. Whether you go for a hotel room or an apartment, they all come with a mini bar, air-conditioning and a private balcony with panoramic sea views. And the apartments have an additional kitchenette. If you're self-catering, there's a handy mini market next door to the Samos Sun. Or take the 20-minute stroll into traditional Pythagorion. The harbour here is bordered by shops, bars and restaurants. And the pretty pebble beach is just a ten minute walk away. However you spend your time here, it's relaxing with a capital 'R'. The airport is about a kilometre away, but even in high season, there are only a few flights a day. And it makes transfers a doddle.
