Kremasti is a small, mostly modern resort on Rhodes’ northwest coast, just 12 kilometres from Rhodes Town. The main draw is the beach. A ten-kilometre sliver of pebbles, it comes with grandstand views of Turkey across the water. Plus, the Aegean breezes make it prime territory for windsurfing and kiteboarding. If you fancy having a go yourself, you’ll find rental huts scattered along the pebbles.
Away from the beach, meanwhile, Kremasti has quite a bit to offer. The centre has tree-shaded squares, outdoor tavernas and souvenir shops. There’s a handful of sights, too, including a library designed like the Parthenon and Panaghia Kremasti, a whitewashed church containing a revered icon of the Virgin Mary. Talking of which, flocks of pilgrims come here to see it in the days around the 15th of August. Local fanfare surrounds the event, with stalls, fairs and traditional Greek dancing taking to the streets.
There’s another surprise here, too – a 15th-century hilltop castle. Climb up to the ruins and you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views over to Turkey. And if you’re up for more exploring, Kremasti is a great launchpad. You’ve got Rhodes Town, with its Medieval old quarter, only ten minutes away by bus. Plus, Petaloudes, with its beautiful, butterfly-filled woods, is just a short drive away.
