Atlantica Aegean Blue

Loading

It's the pool scene that turns heads at the Atlantica Aegean Blue. A turquoise number complete with water jets winds its way around the grounds, snaking under little wooden bridges. The real talking point, though, is the mini waterpark that's brimming with tubes and slides. You're also just footsteps from the beach, so you can swap pool for sea in seconds.

Elsewhere, there's plenty in the way of sports and activities. As well as favourites like beach volleyball, there are things like canoeing on offer. And special attention is paid to smaller guests at the Thomson Kids' Club.

The hotel itself is made up of low-level buildings separated by gardens, so expect a village-like vibe. In the bedrooms, calm vanilla tones strike a contemporary note. If you've got the children in tow, family rooms come with the option of sliding doors, giving you a little bit of privacy.

Pleasant surprise

We visited the Atlantica Aegean Blue during the Easter school holidays with our daughter and her family. We also took our other granddaughter making a party of seven. It was our first holiday in Rhodes and we had little knowledge of what to expect. We needn’t have worried because we had a great time! Although we experienced a couple of rain showers and a few overnight claps of thunder, the days were generally hot (about 23C) although the swimming pools were bracing to say the least. It was also quite breezy and rather chilly during the evenings. Hence if you’re going early in the season, take something warm for the evenings! This hotel is very, very good. There are loads of water related activities – indeed a water park (free entry for guests) adjacent to the hotel. The food is excellent and the drinks included on the all inclusive package are very authentic and, without exception, readily available. We were not particularly impressed with the Lagoon Asian Restaurant – here quantity of food offered was not too great and nor was the speed of service. Not sure we would bother to book into this facility again. There are loads of Thomson staff on hand to help, entertain and advise and the hotel staff are very pleasant and polite. Rooms were good but for the telly addicts out there – forget the box for the duration of your holiday – there is only so much BBC World you can take. A bus stop exists right outside the hotel with services to Lindos and Rhodes Town. We went to the latter (about 45 minutes) at a cost of 3.5 Euros. No charge was made for the kids (5 and under). Rhodes Town is split into new and old areas – personally I preferred the old area. There are however some flashy and modern clothes shops in the new area. Diagoras Airport was a bit dodgy - lots of toilets out of action, as were the escalators and lifts. In addition only about 50% of the interior lighting was switched on. No interior public address system so flights / boarding not called. You need to keep a keen eye on the monitors to discover what is going on! I'm guessing this might have something to do with the difficult economic situation from which Greece is currently suffering.More

Fantastic Stay, would return in a heartbeat!!

We stayed here on the hotels first week of opening (5th - 12th April) and were not disapointed. The welcome we received was wonderful with a speedy check in and then a golf buggy ride to our room. The hotel had aslo opened up the restaurant so we were able to have something to eat after a long day of travelling. The room we were in (1311) was large and consisted of a huge bathroom with separate shower, bath with shower over, wc and large sink area. A large area with at least a king size very comfortable bed, dressing table, large tv with a few english channels, fridge with complimentary drinks (not resocked) and tea/coffee making facilities. Sliding doors to the rear of the room with two single beds one on either side, then sliding doors to a patio area with a table and four chairs and as we were on the ground floor two sun loungers. This was cleaned daily with fresh towels if we needed them. The food was AMAZING with a very good variety which we all thoroughly enjoyed and it was nice to try different things each morning and evening. Everything was clearly labelled and the restaurant was well laid out. It had a different food culture each night as an extra option. We didnt eat in the restaurant at lunchtime but made use of the poolside snack bars, these were lovely with a wide variety from fresh pizza, chips, salad, fruit, paninis, sandwiches etc. The Entertainment was really good, with a mixture of tribute bands and the Reps evenings, we enjoyed them all - the last night was the best with a Beatles tribute act, Really Well Done to them :) They also did poolside games if you wanted to join in you could but there was no pressure. The drinks were a selection of cocktails ( all really lovely - try them all!! ) beer, spirits, juices and freshly made coffees and LOVELY hot chocolates! They do have Free Wifi but we didnt use this as it was a strictly no gadgets holiday!! They have a well stocked shop on site where you can get most things. This is also where you get your pool towels from, you are given a ticket and can then change them twice, there was no charge or deposit. The cost of the safe was 20 euros but good for peace of mind for our important bits and bobs. The pools were great although a little chilly when you first got in!! But we found if you kept active you soon got used to it. There were always plenty of sun beds and certainly no need to be up at silly o'clock to reserve them!! Although this may well change as the season goes on. We had one trip out A Tale of 2 1/2 Cities and loved the majority of this. The hotel will provide a packed lunch in a cool bag - order the day before and then you choose in the morning what you would like, it includes sandwiches, fruit, cake, crisps and drinks, a really great idea. This was a fantastic week for us and we cannot fault the hotel or staff and would definately look to return.More

Fantastic family holiday

We stayed with our son (aged 6) at the Atlantica Aegean Blue all inclusive from 5th to 12th April 2014. We booked online through Thomson and flew with Thomson Airways. It was our son's very first holiday abroad and also our first holiday abroad in 8 years so we were really looking forward to it but didn't know what to expect - we were not disappointed! Hotel - the hotel is gorgeous, it has a huge spacious entrance and reception area with marble tiled floors and comfortable sofas and chairs. On arrival we got a very warm welcome from all the staff/management and the Thomson reps/entertainment team along with a complimentary drink. We had selected a "family room with limited sea view" when we booked and we were allocated a room in the main building overlooking the pools and out to the sea. In our room there was ample storage/wardrobe space, a good sized bathroom with an over the bath shower, 6ft double bed, dressing table and stool, a TV with two or three English speaking news channels including BBC World, and beyond a partition wall there was a bunk bed, a small desk and chair and a desk lamp. There was a sliding patio door leading to a spacious balcony with a table and four chairs and a beautiful view each morning! The room was cleaned daily and the bedsheets were changed every second day. Bathrobes and slippers were provided and there was Dove liquid handwash in the dispensers in the bathroom (no messy bars of soap!) There were tea/coffee making facilities and a fridge with bottled water, soft drinks, milk and orange juice. These were not replaced during the stay but were provided at no charge. There is a well-stocked mini market on site with Nescafe coffee and Tetley teabags! We refilled our water bottles a few times from the water dispensers in the restaurant. On arrival we were given a card which allowed 3 free pool towels per week per person. Towels are collected and changed at the mini market. There is not a single negative thing that I could say about our room but the only thing I would say is that if we had been allocated a garden room on the ground floors of the additional accommodation blocks then there may have been a problem with ants (we saw a few creepy crawlies around the grassed areas beside the pools from time to time). There are two or three outdoor play areas around the hotel. The charge for the room safe was 20 euros, well worth it to keep your passports and important documents safe. Check-out time was 1200 hours but depending on the availability, your room could be kept until 1800 hours for a charge of around 65 euros. We did this so that we were able to make more of our last day as our flight was not until the evening. Food - what can I say? It was tremendous! I've never seen so much food! The breakfast choice was amazing. Can't comment about lunch in the restaurant as we got food from the snack bars around the pool at lunchtimes. The evening meals were fantastic, we ate something different every evening. There was a different theme each night, Greek (obviously!), Italian, Mexican, etc etc, and even our son who is a fussy eater tried one or two new things while we were there. We didn't book a meal in the Asian restaurant so I can't comment on it. We have definitely put on a few pounds and our son could not get enough of the chocolate ice cream from the pool snack bar! Entertainment/Facilities - there was lots of daytime entertainment around the main pool from the Thomson entertainment team, such as aquafit, sports and games. The water park opened on our last day so I imagine it will be up and running by now, we spent an hour or two there on the last morning, there are a few water rides, a lazy river and a small area for younger children (this is the pool with the frog in the centre on the promotional video). It seems to be well staffed with plenty of lifeguards. Please note that the snacks and drinks in the water park are not part of the all inclusive deal. For cooler days (or if you just want to get out of the sun for an hour or two) there are snooker/pool tables, table tennis tables and coin operated games in the basement of the hotel. There is wi-fi in the reception area and the wi-fi access code is provided on check-in. If you are on holiday with several children and infants there is a kids club and creche operated by Thomson staff. We didn't see much of the evening entertainment with the exception of the last evening when there was an excellent live band who did a Beatles tribute set, if you're reading this guys, well done, you were great! The Thomson team work very hard organising the entertainment during the day, and even when they're not around the pool you can see them on the stage rehearsing songs and dance routines for the evening entertainment. I have to disagree with one reviewer's comments about Thomson being rubbish. I agree that there was a delay at the airport on the way home however from what I could see it was because there were only two check-in desks open and there were four or five flights all departing within an hour of each other. Sightseeing - we didn't do an awful lot of sightseeing as we went with the intention of having a lazy week in the sun and splashing around in the pool. We walked down from the complex onto the beach one day (just four or five minutes from the main building) and in all honesty the beach wasn't up to much, it may have been better further along the resort. On one of the days we decided to take the local bus up to Rhodes Town just to see some of the "real" Rhodes. The bus times are available from the hotel reception and the bus picks up and drops off outside the hotel. The cost was around three or four euros per person each way. If you prefer to hire a car there is a desk in the hotel reception for Rodos Cars. The representative seemed very knowledgeable and I noticed a number of different car seats from infant carriers to booster seats, it seemed to me like a reputable and reliable place to hire a car. We pre-booked taxi transfers through Thomson from Rhodes airport to Kolymbia and back to the airport again on departure day. They were arranged locally with no complications whatsoever. The reps, the entertainment team and the hotel staff all did an excellent job and if they are reading this we would like to thank you all very much for helping to make our holiday fantastic! If you are thinking of booking this holiday then I hope that our review has helped you with your decision! The Wilson Family xMore

Best Family holiday to date

We have just returned from a one week stay at this hotel, and we wish we had stayed for two!!!!! It was only meant to be a cheeky little extra holiday, but ended up being much much more! We had a fabulous time! I don't want to repeat everything the other guests have written, but you will not be disappointed if you book here. It is the ideal family holiday hotel, although (as long as you like children) not exclusive to families! We arrived the second week of opening and were absolutely amazed by the staff and service! As has previously been stated, we arrived with about 5 other flights, very close together, but the check in was a breeze, in comparison to other hotels, and they had also kept the restaurant open until midnight so that we could have a proper meal, before the golf buggy journey to our room! We were lucky enough to be given a room in one of the beach view bungalows, and we were so thrilled with this! With a two year old, who was asking for her bed before the evening entertainment had finished, we would not have liked one of the noisier rooms facing the pools, restaurant or entertainment! The food was of a very high standard, and the way in which the restaurant is laid out is very impressive. Lots of separate stations, so you never feel like you are in a canteen (similar to the set up, at some restaurants.) The beach is very rugged and quite unkempt, but we still enjoyed the picturesque view and taking our daughter for a paddle. We also loved the option of using the aqua park, and whilst you have to purchase drinks here (a little odd!) we used to just bring up drinks from the a/l pool bar very close by. Being 'out of season' worked really well for us. There was no fight for a sun bed, each day, and you could leisurely stroll from pool, to water park, to beach, knowing there would be a sun bed for you...and plenty of them! I love the sunshine, and knew we were taking a gamble going at Easter, but apart from one over cast day (ideal for a trip to Lindos), one overnight storm, and one ropey morning, the weather was wonderful...glorious blue skies, and we have returned with impressive tans! I am in agreement with others who feel this hotel is more 4 star, than 5 star, mainly, as has been previously said, there are no international drinks, the mini bar in room is a tad pathetic (almost better not bothering) and the beach could do with a bit of 'tarting' up....but apart from that we had a fabulous time and definitely would like to return at a similar time next year....this time for two weeks! The staff were truly amazing! A real gem of a hotel!More

Fantastic friendly hotel spoilt by freezing cold swimming pools

This hotel has very friendly staff, very clean, superb food with lots of variety and really good quality. The only thing that spoil it are the un-heated swimming pools We have just come back and they are just too cold to go in. Our room though really comfortable was in the main block and there is no air con. in the rooms., it is just too hot to sleep in and we were told there were water sports on the beach by the tour operator and there are none. It is really worth hiring a car and seeing the island. Take insect repellent with you as at night you can really get bitten by mosquitos.More
