Guide to Neochori

'High on a hill, surrounded by forests and reached via country lanes, the setting of this rural retreat is nothing short of breathtaking.'

In the southeast foothills of the mountains - where Pelion's soaring peaks have diminished to a more middling height - Neochori huddles round its cobbled village square. In rural Greece, a chapel, a taverna and three houses is all you need to make up a hamlet. And an 18th century church, a handful of tavernas for hearty mountain menus, and rather more than just three houses - Neochori is a fairly substantial village. But it's still as quiet and countrified as you could wish for. The surrounding woods of pine and plane trees, chestnuts and old oaks escaped the peninsula's forest fires of the mid-1990's, so their dappled shade provides welcome relief from the hot Greek sun. Head south and the road drops down to Argalasti – with its bakeries, shops and tavernas. And from here there's a route to the east coast shores of Potistika where a beautiful beach is bounded by huge rock formations and gazes out across the Aegean to Skiathos and Skopelos. Put simply, it's gorgeous.
