Guide to Afissos

'A water-stop for Jason and the Argonauts, this chic seaside village is now a favourite watering-hole with discerning Greek visitors.'

On the sheltered coast of the Pagasitic Gulf, Affissos climbs the hillside behind its fishing harbour. Down at the water's edge there's a gently shelving shingle beach at Lagoudi Cove. And flanking it on either side are the sandy Kalifteri and Abovos bays – where windsurfing, waterskiing and banana boat rides all feature on the watersport menu. The lengthy quayside is lined with cafes, tavernas and restaurants and forms the launch pad for boat trips to neighbouring shores and islands. As you come inland, there's a bakery, a grocery shop and a little village square hemmed with whitewashed buildings. And tiered into the slopes behind and above, red-roofed houses mingle with the grey-green olive groves. Now you're in biking and hiking country, with treks and trails through wild flower glades to mountain springs and streams. If driving is more your thing, you can soon be in neighbouring Argalasti, at the beaches of Kalamos or secluded Paou, or buying bread from the wood-fired bakery at hilltop Lafkos. And a 25km drive could see you sipping Tsipouro and sampling seafood tit-bits in one of the waterfront ouzeris of Volos.
