"Halfway up the island leaning more to the west coast, Magazia is surrounded by cliffs and mountains – ruggedly beautiful with breathtaking views."
The small inland village of Magazia has its own authentic taverna, a few small shops and a bakery, and is ideally situated within a ten-minute drive of Paxos' three coastal towns – Lakka, Loggos and the capital, Gaios. But it is on the dramatic west coast where the romantic sunsets can be seen, changing the colour of the nearby Erimitis limestone cliffs, especially at twilight.
Stroll into Agioi Apolstoli with its simple little church and picnic on top of the cliffs with the view of Achai Bay and its cloistered caves or turn inland and climb up to Paxos' highest summit.
Magazia has a cosy feel with friendly locals and captivating scenery. The dry-stone walls snake their way over the island between derelict farmhouses and abandoned stone olive presses and the olive trees are centuries old, their massive twisted trunks pitted with 'eyes'. Locals estimate that over 250,000 trees had been planted by the Venetians on the island six centuries ago and Paxos now produces the best olive oil in Greece.
