'An unspoilt pastel-coloured fishing village where traditional Greek life stills rules the day.'
Set around a stunning turquoise bay, Lakka from the sea must be one of the most ravishing sights the Ionian islands have to offer. Once you've stopped cooing over the exquisitely pretty harbour village with its pastel-painted houses and vine-festooned balconies, you'll find a friendly place where locals mingle happily with summer visitors. Stroll around the warren of enchanting streets and soak up the silence - an idyll broken only by light birdsong. Pull up a chair at one of the cafes lining the intimate squares, sip a pulse-pumping Greek coffee and watch village life unfold before you. Dip olive-oiled chunks of bread into soft mounds of pink-hued taramosalata while eyeing the visiting yachts gliding into the bay. Or retreat to the nearby pebble beaches to sunbathe and swim in crystal-clear waters. Come evening, Lakka moves up a gear – although not overly so – with lots of friendly tavernas and restaurants lighting up to greet you. Afterwards, join the locals over a harbourfront metaxa as the last of the sun's fading rays disappear beneath the horizon. For a taste of old Paxos, follow one of the roads that criss-cross the headland to experience tranquil olive groves unchanged in centuries. Hire a motorboat to phut-phut around secluded pebble coves. And don't miss a boat trip to Anti Paxos, the tiny nearby island whose white sand beaches are lapped by the brightest blue seas you'll ever see.
