Hotel Acropole

Tucked away in the narrow, winding streets of Parga's old town is this small family-run hotel, recently refurbished and renovated to provide the very best in modern style and comfort. Luxury has not been neglected in any way, from the hydro-massaging showers to the air-conditioning. Each room has a balcony, with comfortable wooden furniture, which either looks out over the breakfast terrace or the street below, and some offer partial views of the town's 14th-century castle.

Six rooms are located on the first floor, with the remainder on the level above. The continental breakfast is served on the terrace with a retractable roof - perfect for a meal under starlight when the terrace is transformed into the locally renowned restaurant, Castello. You may also eat inside where a glass covered opening in the floor shows off the wine cellar with its stock of over 3,500 bottles. Alternatively, you can wander through the backstreets and along the seafront to discover your own favourite spot for dinner.

When it opened its doors in 1884 it was the first hotel in the town and has been in the capable hands of the Zigouris family ever since. Alexis Zigouris, the Swiss-trained chef, and his five brothers all lend a hand in running the hotel from working behind the bar to waiting in the hotel's restaurant, serving a bewildering range of dishes including the likes of venison and ostrich.

Parga is a Greek town that isn't solely dependent on tourism and the surrounding olive groves show off one of the main sources of income for the local people. Wandering down the back streets you will soon see why the Venetians occupied this pretty town protected by a string of islets off the coast. The Venetian castle and a number of beaches are easily reached on foot from the harbourfront and caiques leave daily to Paxos, which is just 20 kilometres away, so all in all the Hotel Acropole is the ideal base for a car free holiday.
