Guide to Parga

Parga is the nearest thing to a beautiful, bubbling island town set on the mainland. It has a vibrant community and its pretty harbour front brims with life. Frequented by foreign and Greek holidaymakers alike, the quayside tavernas are justly popular for their lovely views and lively ambience, but don't miss out on exploring the quaint back streets, lined with charming old houses and colourful shops, where some of the town's finest eateries can be found. During the day, Parga offers a surprising variety of sand and shingle beaches to choose from. The little town beach - a flat five-minute walk from the harbour - is sheltered by a group of tiny islands. Parga's other famous beach, Lichnos, can be reached by boat from the harbour, as can several secluded coves dotted along this coast. A few miles up the coast from Parga, Sivota is a disarmingly unpretentious seaside village with an equally fine choice of beaches. Sivota may lack Parga's historic appeal, but it more than makes up for this with its sleepy charm and thoroughly laid-back ambience. Sivota's focal point is its enchantingly pretty sailing harbour, an attractively landscaped, traffic-free promenade where just under a dozen tavernas and cafes set out their tables. The nearest string of beaches is a five-minute walk to the north over a low headland (those with walking difficulties should note that Sivota is considerably flatter than Parga), whilst the deep, tree-shaded cove of Zavia and the wide Bay of Mega Ammos lie a little further to the south. Parga and Sivota can be combined in a twin-centre holiday with Lefkas for those who would like to experience the Greek mainland and one of the Ionian Islands.
