Remarkably well-preserved, Nauplion must rank as the most picturesque town on the Greek mainland. Much of the laid-back charm of Nauplion as we find it today dates from the early 19th century, when it enjoyed brief fame as the first capital of modern Greece after the liberation of the country from Turkish occupation in 1828. Behind the bustling port and the spaciously laid-out waterfront, colourful town houses and neo-classical buildings overlook narrow paved streets. Understandably enough, a town as pretty and as interesting as Nauplion does attract a certain number of visitors, but the town never feels 'touristy' and local life continues unchanged. A short drive down the coast takes you to Paralio Astros, a pretty fishing town originally built on a hill known as 'Nisi' (the 'Island' - the site was once an island but it became joined to the mainland hundreds of years ago), which is crowned by the remains of a magnificent Venetian castle. The area is a popular holiday destination for Greeks, and many of the homes there are summer residences for the city dwellers who swell the population during the months of July and August. Traditional coffee houses and tavernas embellish the harbourfront with their twinkling lights and the murmur of exchanged gossip and merry-making. With the sea on one side, mountains to the other and wetlands to the south, the area houses unique species of flora and fauna in abundance, and much of the region has been designated National Ecological Park.
