"For a quieter type of holiday, but with everything on the doorstep, Periyiali is ideal. The sea is crystal-clear with no currents and the water warms up quickly in the summer months – perfect."
With excellent views across to the mainland's mountains Periyiali's cafes and tavernas have chosen the right spot to attract custom. They stretch along the coastal road by Passa, a long shingle beach where there is excellent swimming facilities. If you tire of relaxing, most of the islands excursions pick up from Periyiali although a fifteen minute walk to the main resort of Nidri with its restaurants, shops and nightlife will provide plenty of entertainment. However, there are no huge hotels here and the town has managed to retain its traditional Greek atmosphere, despite its popularity, especially with the yachting fraternity. The sea in Nidri is usually very calm so it's an ideal spot to learn sailing – and it's a good way of getting a tan! Nidri is also the assembly point for the annual Ionian Regatta usually held in the third week of September - one of the biggest yachting events in the Mediterranean. With all this nautical activity around non-sailors could hire a cycle. The surrounding area is fairly flat and an excellent pathway through the olive groves to Nidri's waterfalls would make a refreshing change from the sea view – strictly for landlubbers only though.
