Villa Viglia

in Nikiana , Lefkas

  • On an old Venetian lookout point
  • Pool with amazing views
  • Bright, rustic interior
Overlooking the coast, there is an eye-popping mountain view right on your doorstep.
There’s a really rustic-chic feel to Villa Viglia. Characterised by wooden ceilings, polished granite floors and modern furniture, it has that cool country-escape feel about it. What’s more, the villa was built on an old Venetian lookout point so the views are some of the best you’ll find on the east coast. In fact, from the terrace, the mountain views are fantastic.

It’s hardly surprising then, that it’s quite a spot for dining al fresco, especially as the sun sets behind the mountains. But it’s not just about the views. There’s also the infinity pool. It’s in a prime position, facing out to sea and even includes a whirlpool. Plus, if you’re travelling with children, there’s a section of pool just for them, too. Elsewhere, you’ve got a vegetable garden right outside, and the owner’s normally pretty good when it comes to letting you try the produce.

Lastly, the villa’s well placed if you want to get out and about. Lefkas isn’t far away and with its 14th-century Santa Maura castle, it’s well worth a visit. What’s more, there are plenty of tavernas and cafés if you fancy a bite to eat.

Your guide to Nikiana, Lefkas

"Unblemished countryside, a low-key beach and a handful of tavernas - if it’s the simple life you hanker for, Nikiana is just the place."

The sleepy fishing village of Nikiana sprawls out lazily along the east coast of Lefkas. Pastel-washed houses skirt the seafront and wend their way round to the harbour where a smattering of bars and tavernas takes over. And this is about as lively as Nikiana gets. Spend the evenings sampling the menus of freshly-netted fish, and move on to a low-key bar for al fresco drinks. Just opposite the quay you’ll find the village’s best – and biggest – beach. It’s a pale brushstroke of fine shingle and pebbles backed by a row of trees. And with views across the twinkling Ionian to the hazy mountains of the mainland, it makes for an idyllic spot. Elsewhere there’s some great walking to be had. Above the village lie the foothills of Skaros mountain where well-worn trails crosshatch their way through slopes draped in olive and cypress trees. Nikiani is well connected for exploring other parts of Lefkas, too. With a coastal road reaching up to Lefkas Town nine kilometres north, and down to Nidri seven kilometres south, it’s a good central base for getting out and about. Plus, there’s a regular bus service running to both these places.
