An introduction to Nidri

Once a sleepy fishing village, Nidri has mushroomed into the main resort on the east coast of Lefkas. It’s a cosmopolitan hub that draws plenty of tourists each summer. And that’s partly down to the beach – a gently shelving stretch of sand, pebbles and shingle. Add calm waters, and it’s little wonder it’s so popular with families. Nidri has its fair share of watersports, too. Everything from jet-skiing to parasailing is on the cards here. But one of the best things about a holiday here is the cluster of islands that lies offshore. Madouri, Sparti, Skorpidi and, the Onassis-owned, Skorpios are all just a boat ride away. Join an organised trip, or hire a motorboat and go it alone. Either way, weighing anchor in secluded bays, snorkelling in clear waters and tucking into al fresco lunches are just some of the pastimes that make these isles so inviting. Back in Nidri there’s plenty happening back on dry land, too. For starters, this is great walking territory. The surrounding area is relatively flat so you don’t need to be an avid hiker to go exploring. Try the walk to Nidri waterfall. It’s a gentle four-kilometre stroll that winds through olive groves. If you’re after something a bit more adventurous though, head up into the nearby hills where you’ll be rewarded with great views out to the islands. And as for evening activities, Nidri’s got enough to keep you from straying too far. There are bars, tavernas and restaurants, and a couple of nightclubs for late-night partying.
