Kardamena is the liveliest place on Kos outside the capital. It's quite a small resort, but is crammed full of shops, bars, restaurants and nightclubs, making it 'fun city' for anyone who wants to party, party, party. The town was once a small fishing village, but these days you're more likely to be grabbing a burger than netting the catch of the day. Kardamena definitely isn't for those who want friendly little taverna's, sunsets over a quiet harbour and an authentic Greek atmosphere. It's a buzzing holiday playground with a good deal of Britishness, where the sun shines brightly, the beer flows freely and the discos pulsate until dawn. During the day, activities mainly revolve around the large, sandy beach, where you can get to grips with some parasailing, try your hand at water-skiing or simply potter about on a pedalo and top up your tan. And there's also a go-kart circuit and a crazy golf course for other diversions from the sunbathing and swimming. If you find you do need a break from the party atmosphere or a hangover cure, a boat trip could be the answer. There are regular sailings from Kardamena to the volcanic island of Nissyros, where you'll find sleepy little villages and beautiful countryside, planted with oak and terebinth trees. Or, if you wish to party through the daytime too, why not try a booze cruise around the neighbouring beaches. Alternatively, head inland up into the mountains to Antimachia, a delightful village largely untouched by tourism. You can wander around the remains of the vast, triangular Venetian castle, see some of the island's characteristic windmills and enjoy a bite to eat in a traditional taverna. Whatever you do – you'll have a ball in Kardamena.
