Skirting Kos’ south-east coastline, this secluded stretch of sand is a world away from lively Kardamena, which sits just a couple of miles along the coast. And that’s exactly where its appeal lies. Cue a wide ribbon of hourglass-fine sand lapped by the blue-green waters of the Med, a backdrop of rolling hills, and postcard-perfect views over the sea to neighbouring Nissyros.
What’s more, because this place is so quiet, there’s little to disturb you – just the odd turtle if you’re lucky. Swimming and sunbathing aside, the beach is a favourite with ramblers, too – you can go for long coastal walks without meeting a soul.
Away from the shorefront, the low-key feel continues. There isn’t any real town to speak of, but you’ll find a few hotels, shops and tavernas dotted about. The best thing about this out-of-the-way spot, though, is that you’re not really out on a limb at all. Kardamena, the island’s most popular tourist hub, is just a ten-minute taxi ride away. Offering up countless shops, restaurants and bars, as well as a pretty harbour, it’s the antithesis of sleepy Helona Beach.
