Guide to Skala

"The growing resort of modern Skala, almost at the southern-most tip of Kefalonia, offers visitors the most glorious long sandy and pebble beach backed by fragrantly handsome pine trees."

With the mountains to your back, you can gaze across the Ionian Sea from the peaceful resort of Skala. This former fishing village offers plenty to do, yet has managed to remain small and very friendly. Wander through the narrow streets admiring humble fishing cottages, enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee at one of the pavement cafes or make friends with the locals over a game of cards. The long, gently shelving beach is Skala's star attraction. This lively town attracts families and couples of all ages.

Beaches

The resort has a lovely sand-and-shingle beach, 4km long, with lots of watersports available (June-September). The long, sandy bay where Turtle Beach is situated is 3km from the resort centre. There are also a number of isolated coves in the surrounding area for the more adventurous to explore.

Eating out

There are about 20 restaurants serving traditional Greek cuisine, including plenty of fresh fish. Try 'bianco' - a delicious, garlicky fish stew served with crusty bread. There are a range of international dishes on offer too, so don't be concerned if your tastebuds prefer British flavours.

Nightlife

The nightlife here is centred around the tavernas, but there are several late night bars if you feel the need to dance the night away! There is also an open air nightclub just a taxi ride away. Those looking for a more relaxed evening should definitely try to experience one of the regular Greek evenings happening within the town. Enjoy authentic food, local music, traditional dancing and a few glasses of chilled ouzo.

Shopping

You'll find a variety of shops locally, selling Greek art, ceramic ware, pottery and jewellery. Also on hand are several mini-markets so if you've run out of suntan lotion or you've got an ice cream craving, you needn't go without for long.

Local information

Skala retains plenty of local character inland - visit the ruins of the Old Town which was almost totally destroyed in the 1953 earthquake. Olive presses, a bathhouse and a well remain today. The quaint fishing quay of nearby Katelios is notable for its fine fish tavernas. There are also a number of boat trips on offer allowing you to experience other areas of this superb island.
