An introduction to The Architects House

The privilege of spending your holiday at the Architect's House is that it allows you to be close to the heart of the village. Just as Byron did, you can sit in the waterside cafe and watch the visitors come and go, looking enviously at the little stack of higgledy-piggeldy houses along the waterfront, while you top up your glass and return to your book or simply let your mind wander and daydream. Just 150 metres from the seafront, this traditionally-furnished house, with its pale-painted exterior and powder blue shutters, offers plenty of space with three bedrooms to comfortably accommodate a family.

Assos' jumble of tiny, colour-washed houses, roofed with red tiles, clusters on the hillside below the lovely pink camponile of Agios Georgios church, and focuses on the village square or 'plateia'. This delightful scene, where Byron is said to have written a few verses, doubtless with a glass of retsina to hand, is shaded by planes, poplars, palms and the ancient olive tree on which Cosmas the Aetolian leaned as he taught. In the evenings, when the day-trippers have left and Assos is at its most magical, you can join the locals doing their 'volta' as you wander down to one of the traditional tavernas for dinner.

Flowers fill small courtyards, children play safely in peaceful alleys and down by the waterfront big-bellied fishermen untangle equally big-bellied fish from bright yellow nets on the quayside in the morning. Assos is still one of Kefalonia's lesser-known gems, attracting a number of daytime visitors but offering few holidaymakers the chance to actually stay here.
