Halkidiki's coastline is made up of three long peninsulas - Kassandra (where Fourka is located), Sithonia and Athos. The first two are typical holiday resorts, while Athos is home to a unique 'Monks' Republic'. In its 11th-century heyday the peninsula boasted 180 monasteries and thousands of monks from the Orthodox Church, today there are about 20 monasteries and around 1,700 monks. Unfortunately women have been prohibited from Athos since 1060 AD and though men are allowed, only ten permits for tourists are issued each day. If you can get a permit, take a walk around the beautiful monasteries, if not you can marvel at this remote, spiritual dwelling from a coastal cruise.
