Grecotel El Greco

With fantastic sea views, an infinity pool and a private beach, The White Palace has relaxation down to a fine art.

The White Palace is set on the seafront in Pigianos Kambos, so sweeping sea views are a big part of its appeal. It’s cocooned by jasmine and bougainvillea-filled gardens, and underlined by a private beach.

The hotel’s design is minimalist and contemporary, with all-white décor and accents of turquoise. Bars with glass-walled terraces make the most of the sea views, as do the two swimming pools.

'Sand and sea, sea and sand and the warm bright sun up there above'

We just returned from a one week family vacation (couple and two toddlers) at the White Palace. Having had a wonderful time at Cape Sounio, another Grecotel, at the Southern tip of Attica two years ago, we are Grecotel fans and had high expectations. The hotel is located in a beautiful setting in a little piece of paradise. The beaches, which are directly accessible from the hotel, are all sand beaches, but there are some patches of rocky waters at the waterfront. The sea was mostly calm with little waves. As noted by others, there does not seem to be a particular policy against reserving sun beds, but we did not at any time have problems getting one. People seemed mostly decent in terms of "towling" their preferred spots. We were told that the hotel in August saw some hundred more guests at any given time which might have somewhat changed the overall look and feel of the place. During our stay, guests seemed to be mostly from Germany, the UK, and some from Russia. The all-inclusive program is called "premium plus" which seems to suggest that there is also a "regular" or just a "premium" all-inclusive deal, but there is not. It is just one of the ways the hotel tries to make the guests feel special. The hotel used to be called "El Greco" and locally seems to still better be known under that old name. It is now the "White Palace" and has since been refurbished. Our room (515) with a balcony sea view was open and light and had been mostly renovated, but still showed some traces of the old "El Greco". All the staff were really friendly to our kids and never passed them without offering at least a smile or a few words. The beach sun beds are conveniently serviced. Markos from the beach team was particularly forthcoming. I should mention that we considered some of the staff somewhat rude or not well trained and would have expected for them to be more flexible in responding to simple requests. Also, the reception staff was not particularly well informed about the possible activities offered by the hotel (water sports, excursions) or alternative possibilities. (In addition, the on-site TUI representative was either not willing or not capable of providing any information beyond the standard trips offered by TUI.) The hotel advertises a number of restaurants, but there is really only the main restaurant offering the buffet and one à la carte restaurant (the "Beach Club Greek Restaurant"). All other available restaurants are really just snack bars. The "Fico d'India" bar offers sandwich snacks for lunch and a change to the regular buffet lunch; it is also a way of avoiding the masses and have a lunch served. The "Fusion restaurant" that is being advertised as offering "unrivaled cuisine creations" does not exist, but apparently will be opening as of next season. The buffet food was good; there was variety. There is a special kids' corner, which mostly offers the same food as the main restaurant. The "all-inclusive" wine was undrinkable; there are no two ways about it. All-inclusive guests receive a voucher for a "gala dinner" upon arrival. The dinner is really just an à la carte menu with a choice of "premium plus" dishes without extra charge. It requires a pre-booking, but the restaurant (this is the "Beach Club Greek Restaurant") seemed always overbooked. We asked for a reservation on Tuesday and were told that the earliest possible date was Saturday evening (we were leaving Saturday morning). There is a long trousers policy for men in the main restaurant in the evenings and it is actually enforced. The policy had people show up in -- long -- sweat pants. We did not leave our kids at the Grecoland, but the facilities seemed really nice. There was a real fun kids' program in the evenings. There were two kinds of circuses, and a musical put up by the entertainment team. The kids had a blast. Some of the entertainers seemed a bit worn out and unmotivated though. TIPS: - Highly recommend the visit to the Agreco Farm (see at The organized trip (it was EUR 53.50 per person; kids were free) comprises a bus pick-up (apprx. 20-30 minutes ride), a guided tour of the farm, mezze and drinks, and a fantastic dinner. - One hour boat trip to Rethymnon can be booked at the water sports centre which we thought was well worthwhile (apprx. EUR 100 per hour). - Book so-called "Gala Dinner" early. In sum, a real good place for a family holiday, if one can stand the crowds.More

Very good vacations

My vacations were few months ago but i promised myself to write nice review because this place is really special. See and beaches are great in Greese everywhere but this place is special because of people. Once woman in restaurant couldn't find our bottle of vine from dinner. I said her that it doesnt matter but she came back with glass of vine and offered it for free. It was very nice from her side. And our favorite waitress was Maria. Very sweet woman who works were many years. She was very intelligent and very kind to our son. Food in the hotel is very good and even if you take half board you kids can have lunch for free. Very good place for children.More

El Greco- Great base for great holiday

Stayed for a week through Thomson, was an hour and 10 minutes transfer from Heraklion airport. First impressions were great, arrived between 2 and 3 am but they had someone waiting to collect our bags off the coach and gave us bottles of water and some chocolate (nice touch!). When we were taken to our room they left out sandwiches for us which saved us after the long journey! Plenty of options for food, something for everyone in the buffet and everything was lovely. Had a standard room, only issue was that there was a power cut every now and then in the last few days that we stayed; these would last no longer than 2-3 minutes. I've not seen any reviews mentioning this before we went so this may have just been an issue with our room. Certainly didn't spoil anything as it was more infrequent than anything. Other than that, rooms were cleaned daily, and towels were also replaced daily. Lovely pool, plenty of bars around so you don't have to walk far for a drink. Staff were all friendly. Hotel is a 20 minute bus ride from Rethymnon old town. This collects and drops off every 30 minutes from right outside the hotel. Worth spending a morning or afternoon walking round the shops and stopping for a drink near the harbour. 2 returns cost less than €5 which was a no brainer really. Was collected from hotel for Gramvousa Island tour and Samaria gourde walking tour which I thoroughly recommend. Overall, very content with hotel and would certainly stay again. More

White Palace -Outstanding

Just returned from El Greco/White Palace on Saturday 5th Sept.... and can say this was an outstanding Hotel and with many positives....i looked at all the reviews prior to booking and and prior to arriving.... i am quite particular about hotels and this was beyond my expectations... service/accomodation/ staff etc were excellent and any issue you had was quickly sorted wether you had a private suite to a normal room ...the attn by the staff was excellent.... the only down side to note is the beach which is pure shale and rocks as you enter the sea...apart from that superb...if you intend to visit Crete ...then this is ideal.... the town of Rethymnon is mixture of old and New and worth a visit.... also the two villages which are about 10 mins drive away are good spots to visit for leisure/shopping /watching the football ...visit Eyes( British Bar) great staff great time and would visit again..... ( not often i say that as i like to visit other places) also worth note do th Safari jeep trip and try to get Thiannis...what a laugh !! very funny guy all the best the Cookies-CheadleMore

Very friendly staff, great food and beautiful views

This is a really beautifully designed hotel with great sea views and many swimming pools to choose from. The service is great - very friendly and eager to please and all the staff remember your favourite drinks or food. We never had to wait to call a waiter or waitress over as they all seem to know when you need another drink! The meals are all really tasty too. There are several reviewers moaning about sunbeds, but we saw no problems here. Obviously the early risers get the first pick but no one ever seems left without a bed because the nice sunbed man will sort one out for you if you ask. He also brings much needed water and iced flannels to everyone during the day. Given this is a large hotel catering to family package holidays they have done really well at balancing boutique chic and 5 star service with a smile, while also being family friendly as well.More
