With a beachfront setting, a diverse dining scene and the full range of sports and activities, the Rithymna Beach delivers across the board.
This place has a great reputation, and it’s easy to see why. Take the location, for starters. The hotel looks out over Crete’s longest beach, a sandy stretch that boasts a coveted Blue Flag. Plus, you’ve got views of Mount Psiloritis and the White Mountains stretching in the opposite direction, so the scenery is superb whichever way you look.

The complex itself has been designed in the style of a Cretan village, so expect a spacious set-up of whitewashed buildings, winding pathways and well-manicured lawns. There’s even a pretty church nestled among the greenery. As for swimming pools, you’ve got three to choose from. The biggest snakes its way under bridges and around little islands, and there’s another pulled up right next to the beach.

On the accommodation front, rooms are spread out around the grounds so you get a real sense of space. The ones in the main building are classically dressed, with floral soft-furnishings paired with cream walls. The newer ones, set in low-level houses, turn the style dial up a notch – think latte-coloured walls, bright artwork and dark-wood or glass furniture.

Another standout feature is the activity scene. Younger guests are entertained around the clock thanks to a Thomson Kids’ Club. And there’s everything from snorkelling and tennis to Greek cookery lessons on offer, too.

Lastly, with four restaurants and the same number of bars, this place goes all out at mealtimes. The main eatery offers international buffet spreads, with organic vegetables and salads playing a starring role. There’s also a separate spread just for children. The themed nights at the Greek taverna are really popular, too. Expect everything from lobster to grilled meat, with candlelit tables dotted across the pool bridge.

Your guide to Rethymnon, Crete

"Crammed full of colour, bustle and beaches, Rethymnon serves up a real slice of Crete."

Crete's third largest town, the beautiful harbour of Rethymnon, is a Greek treat and a half. You only need to take a stroll around its intricate maze of streets, laced with white-washed cottages, past fine buildings and churches and you'll experience the real Crete. It seems little has changed for decades here. The open air markets are as lively as ever, and the shops, the tavernas and al fresco restaurants fizz with activity. And wherever you wander, you'll notice the influence of previous visitors. The Venetians held Rethymnon in high regard and their architecture can be seen in quiet courtyards and elaborate fountains, as well as the huge fortress which stands above the harbour, presenting a stern face northwards across the Sea of Crete. Yet for all its authentic charm, everything you could need here is to hand and there's a great range of accommodation to suit every style and budget. Plus of course, there's that all-important beach. A palm-fringed promenade backs a beautiful beach of pale sand and shingle which stretches for several kilometres. And if you want to let your adventurous side shine, you can surf the waves on a jetski, feel the wind rushing through your hair from the back of a speed boat or learn to windsurf. After dark, start your night in one of the bars or tavernas - many of which have entertainment - before heading to a disco. The key to keeping up with the Cretans is to start late - most don't even think about eating their evening meal until around nine, and bars stay open until the very early hours. So what are you waiting for?
