Clustered around a tiny, taverna-lined harbour, Livadia is like a lost Cretan world. Here, in this tiny hamlet on the island's western tip, Greek time reigns supreme. Only the gentle buzz of cicadas seems to mark the hours between lunch, siesta and dinner. Nobody ever seems to have the inclination to check their watches. And the only activity rippling through the day is when local fishermen land their catches on the harbourside. If looking for the green light to slow right down, then this is excellent news. After all, all you need do is pop on those flip-flops, kick back and enjoy. When it comes to the holiday essentials, you're not badly off either. Swim and snorkel in the sparkling harbour waters or comb the rugged coast to find rocky bays made for sunbathing. Plus, one of Crete's most enchanting beauty spots lies just half an hour's drive south. At Elafonissi, a gem-like islet awaits across an idyllic, pink-sanded lagoon. Just wade through the light blue, shallow waters and nab yourself an arc of sugar-white sand to idle away the day on. Beware though, the spectacular beauty of the place makes it very popular, especially in high season. And while you're here, make time to see nearby Chrissoskalitsia monastery – a vision of white poised on a rocky outcrop above the blue sea. Crete's interior is an open invitation to explore. Meander along a deserted bridleway to find yourself in olive-cloaked hills, ablaze with colour in early summer. Or head for nearby Kefali, with its picturesque, frescoed church. Once done, take a seat at one of the rustic tavernas on its square and ponder over the mini-paradise you've found yourself.
