Given the fact Kokini Hani sits on Crete’s north coast, near Heraklion, it’s surprising the town hasn’t developed into a bigger resort over the years. It has all the essential holiday credentials, after all – sandy beaches, good facilities and a convenient location near the airport.
Yet it’s this low profile that makes the place so appealing – it’s got everything you need, but isn’t too loud or overcrowded. The star turn is the beach. A 500-metre sweep of sand, it’s lined with bars, sunloungers and parasols. Further along, you’ll find pebblier stretches where the vibe is more peaceful. The shores catch some cooling breezes, too, so they’re good for windsurfing and kite boarding.
Another string to Kokini Hani’s bow is its restaurants. They range from tavernas to pizzerias and British-style cafés, and many overlook the sands. The nightlife hits a happy medium, too, with a few lively music bars in among the quieter wining-and-dining spots.
When you want to speed things up a bit, Hersonissos has lots of bars and clubs and is just a short cab ride away. Day trips are easy, as well. Heraklion’s shops and museums are just a 20-minute bus ride away, and Knossos is only a little bit further on.
