Villa Thetis

in Hersonissos , Crete

  • Hillside backdrop
  • Contemporary interior
  • Great for relaxing
Small and traditional, the stone-built Villa Thetis combines a great location with plenty of peace and quiet.
For a taste of authentic Greece you can’t go wrong with Villa Thetis. Cue rustic stone walls, terracotta roof tiles and lots of wooden trimmings. Plus, its walled gardens and private outdoor pool are wrapped in acres of olive groves. So despite being set on the edge of one of Crete’s most cosmopolitan ports, it seems really secluded.

As for the interior, you’ll notice a homely farmhouse feel to the place courtesy of the wood-beamed ceilings and brickwork foundations. The open-plan kitchen and living area, in particular, is a cosy, rustic space complete with terracotta-tiled floors, chunky wooden tables and an inviting red-cushioned sofa-bed.

On the subject of slumber spots, there’s space for six others in the villa’s three cottage-style bedrooms. And each has its own individual touch. On the ground floor you’ll find a small double room with an exposed brickwork fireplace. And on the upper level, there’s a twin spruced up with bold fabrics and another double featuring an elegant iron-framed four-poster. From here, French windows lead out onto a stonework balcony with views over the outdoor pool area and the beach in the near distance.

Your guide to Hersonissos, Crete

“If you’re looking for fun with a capital F, rather than Greek with a capital G, cosmopolitan Hersonissos is your perfect holiday hotspot.”

If you’re seeking somewhere you can appreciate the gorgeous Greek climate but want less of a traditional time away, Hersonissos is right up your holiday street. A modern resort overlooking the sapphire-blue seas, it won’t win many stars for authentic Greek atmosphere, but it’s a constant hit with the young crowd, attracted by its superb beach life and buzzing bars, restaurants and discos. And when it comes to kicking back, this town really knows how to do it, with three beaches to choose from. And whichever pocket of pillow-soft sand you decide to stretch out on, all offer great watersports, with some of the best facilities you’ll find anywhere on the island. For more thrills and spills, you also find the Star Beach Water Park here where you can brave the chutes and shoot down the scream-if-you-want-to-go-faster slides. Back in town you can browse the shops for bargain leather goods, while breathing in the fragrant scents of the herb and spice stores, selling produce from the mountains. Then it’s time to get ready for the evening’s activities. The focal point of Hersonissos’ nightlife is the attractive harbour area, teeming with waterside bars and restaurants, where you can enjoy anything from ‘moussaka’ to Mexican. However, if you prefer a more relaxed pace of life, you won’t be completely out of place in Hersonissos. The charming Old Town has quaint narrow streets, lined with friendly tavernas, while the villages of Piskopiano and Koutouloufari are perfect places to sit in a café, enjoy the traditional Cretan atmosphere and take in the magnificent views of the sea. Now all you have to do is sit back and relax.
