Hotel King Minos Palace  

The King Minos Palace is terraced into a hillside, just a couple of minutes’ walk from a sandy beach, so the setting couldn’t be better. But it’s not just the location that makes this place stand out from the crowd. It looks the part, too. Glance back at this hotel from the beach and you’ll see its pastel-washed cubist buildings peering out from a thick blanket of trees. Up close, it’s just as pretty. Lawns are dotted with palms and cypress trees, while the pool area comes with a wraparound terrace, plenty of sunbeds, and a roomy square-shaped pool. There’s a kids’ pool and a bar here, too.

Step inside and you’ll find a modern lobby. Kitted out with comfy coral-coloured chairs and dark-wood coffee tables, it strikes the perfect balance between smart and homely. The same vibe continues into the bedrooms. Painted in white and accessorised with light-wood furniture, they’re stylish and comfortable at the same time. Plus, they all come with nice-to-haves like TVs, radios and fridges.

Elsewhere, there’s a pair of restaurants – one buffet and one à la carte. The first is a traditional-looking venue with tiled terracotta floors, whitewashed walls. Expect Greek buffets, themed evenings and show cooking. As for the à la carte, it serves international favourites alongside local dishes outside on the terrace.

Lastly, there’s the entertainment. Activities here are pretty low-key, so you can take them or leave them, depending on what you fancy. Things like volleyball, water aerobics and water polo are all on the menu during the day, while evenings see occasional live music and folklore shows.
