A world-class Thalasso and spa, beautiful gardens, and plenty in the way of sports - this beachside sanctuary is a gem.
This place is arranged like a miniature town, with blocks cocooned among palms and hedges. Inside, the rooms fall firmly into the 'very comfortable' category. Think soft fawns and creams finished with plush bedcovers and chaise-longues. For added luxury, book one of the VIP rooms - they come with a gorgeous pool, which is shared with your VIP room neighbours.
One of the best things about this place is the lengthy list of sports and activities on offer. Tennis tops the bill, with seven red clay courts and four quartz sand courts to choose from. Elsewhere, you'll find squash courts, a golf academy and watersports like diving and windsurfing.
The real pièce de résistance, though, is the Royal Mare Spa. Voted the World’s Leading Thalasso and Spa Resort every year since 2007, it’s a blue-tiled oasis of hydromassage pools, steam cabins and massage rooms. There are even dieticians who’ll work out your own healthy menu dishes, which are then prepared for you at the Spa restaurant.
Talking of which, the culinary scene here is rather special. As well as a beach bistro, there’s a Cretan restaurant with tables and chairs spilling onto a bougainvillea-decked courtyard. At the romantic Candia, meanwhile, gourmet Mediterranean creations are served above one of the pools.
You’ll find two lagoon-like pools laid out in the grounds, plus lots of quiet hideaways in the gardens. For a change of scene, walk down to the beach. A band of tiny pebbles, it’s dotted with thatched parasols and sunbeds. One more thing. Although peaceful, Hersonissos is only a 20 to 25 minute walk away.

If you’re seeking somewhere you can appreciate the gorgeous Greek climate but want less of a traditional time away, Hersonissos is right up your holiday street. A modern resort overlooking the sapphire-blue seas, it won’t win many stars for authentic Greek atmosphere, but it’s a constant hit with the young crowd, attracted by its superb beach life and buzzing bars, restaurants and discos. And when it comes to kicking back, this town really knows how to do it, with three beaches to choose from. And whichever pocket of pillow-soft sand you decide to stretch out on, all offer great watersports, with some of the best facilities you’ll find anywhere on the island. For more thrills and spills, you also find the Star Beach Water Park here where you can brave the chutes and shoot down the scream-if-you-want-to-go-faster slides. Back in town you can browse the shops for bargain leather goods, while breathing in the fragrant scents of the herb and spice stores, selling produce from the mountains. Then it’s time to get ready for the evening’s activities. The focal point of Hersonissos’ nightlife is the attractive harbour area, teeming with waterside bars and restaurants, where you can enjoy anything from ‘moussaka’ to Mexican.
