Elounda Bay Palace

in Elounda , Crete T rating: 5

Gazing over a bay and sandy beaches, this modern hotel is made for a laid-back break by the Aegean.
The Elounda Bay Palace has a seaside position par excellence. Curving around Mirabello Bay, south of Elounda, it couldn’t get much closer to the water’s edge. The views are out of this world - a vast sapphire expanse leads the eye to mountains on the horizon. What’s more, the hotel sits in quiet gardens just a kilometre from the heart of Elounda. It’s less than a 15-minute walk to its restaurants and shops.

Even the restaurants here have moored themselves right by the water. First up is Thalassa. All white wicker chairs and floor-standing lanterns, its seafood delicacies get rave reviews. At the Sail-In bar, meanwhile, the atmosphere is more on the sundowners-and-social side. Styled like a boat deck complete with fluttering overhead sails, it’s something of a hotspot at night when guests come here for cocktails.

The waterfront isn’t just about food though. You’ll find little pockets of sands set along the shore, each furnished with sunbeds and parasols. Or head for the spa for a soothing massage or to swim in the indoor pool.

Talking of pools, the main one takes centre-stage in the gardens. It’s refreshingly simple - a rectangular slab of turquoise with Roman steps leading into the water. And around it, you’ve got lawns and shady trees offering quiet corners for reading or sleeping.

The rooms deserve a special mention as well. Spread around the gardens in low-rise blocks or bungalows, they’re dressed in muted tones offset by rich blues or lemony yellows. Balconies, satellite TVs and minibars are all in place, too.

Your guide to Elounda, Crete

"It may have plenty of life, but fun-packed Elounda is still not a million miles from the small fishing village it once was."

When it comes to ‘wow’ factor, the location of Elounda’s harbour is right at the top of the scale. Set on a bay facing the dramatic Spinalonga Peninsula, joined to the mainland by a stick-thin causeway, it’s pretty breathtaking stuff. It’s fair to say that Elounda doesn’t score the crème de la crème of marks for its beaches, but you’ll find a shimmering sandy stretch to kick-back on. And with plenty of watersports facilities and seaside tavernas here, you don’t have to move far for activities and eating. The swimming is good, and it perfect for snorkelling or scuba diving fans. If you’re into people watching rather than underwater exploration, a good place to while away a couple of hours is Elounda’s stylish harbour. Laced with lively bars and cafés, pull up a chair at whichever takes your fancy and enjoy the yin and yang of a sticky ‘baklava’ cake and Greek coffee. You’re in a prime spot here to simply watch the world go by and watch the colourful fishing boats sailing into the marina. After dark, the harbour is a hive of activity, with oodles of places to eat and some pulsating discos where you can bop ‘til you drop. Once you’ve been here, we’re sure you’ll agree, Elounda is the perfect recipe for the perfect holiday.
