When it comes to waterfront locations, this hotel is sitting pretty. And it’s got plenty of Greek charm with it. Cue whitewashed bungalows, shaded taverna terraces and gardens filled with hibiscus, palms and bougainvillea. What’s more, it’s all set around a spit of land jutting into Mirabello Bay.
It’s the gardens that steal the show though - there’s a charming, slightly untamed feel to them. Threaded with potted geraniums, old olive trees and stone footpaths leading to the guest rooms and bungalows, they just say ‘Greece’. And in the middle is a rectangular pool, bordered by sunloungers and palms.
Another nice spot is the water’s edge. It’s a picture-postcard scene graced by two small beaches and a rock-lined waterfront. Watersports like scuba diving and sailing are available from here, too.
On the culinary front, the hotel strikes a variety of notes. Beside the water, there’s the pretty Terpsis taverna where guests can enjoy traditional Greek cooking under cooling pines. The Bacchus, meanwhile, is the scene for the main buffet meals conjured up on a bougainvillea-draped terrace. Lastly, there’s La Bouillabaise. As its name suggests, this beachfront number specialises in gourmet French cuisine with the focus on fish.
The rooms themselves see a change of emphasis. They’re all kitted out in ultra-contemporary style. Think sleek pale-wood furnishings and mood lighting twinned with balconies or terraces. And the superior waterfront bungalows are something special. Inches from the water, they come with ladders into the sea and hi-tech touches like whirlpool baths and CD players.
Also found within the grounds is a unique open-air art exhibition - a striking collection of 3-dimensional works called Art Symposium, the exhibition is added to every other year. As well as providing a base for relaxation, the Minos Beach offers a wide range of watersports and, in addition to its main and à la carte restaurants, it has its own taverna serving authentic Cretan dishes.

Minos beach wasn't our first choice of hotel as it appeared expensive, but we were asked to transfer there, as the hotel we originally booked was closed. (which we were informed of 1 week before our holiday). We were dissapointed with the garden... more on this review
